I got to Nick’s at about 7:30 local time. I was pretty lucky with the weather - it was quite overcast, but I mostly got drizzled on. There were a few heavy rain showers but I drove out of them fairly quickly.
Nick and Anna have rolled out the red carpet for me - beers, steak kebabs, Mexican egg rolls and even dessert. I feel pretty spoiled, and a wee bit drunk.
Sartre (the writer, not the Ferrari driver in Grand Prix) said that “Hell is other people” which leads me to believe that he spent some time driving on Interstate 70 in Ohio.
It appears that the only requirement for an Ohio drivers license is a proven ability to drive in the left hand lane no matter what the circumstances. (Here comes my yearly rant…) These idiots manage to turn the highway into a single lane road, with occasional passing zones on the right (between the trucks). It’s absolutely insane, they’ll just plod along, totally oblivious to the giant line of cars piling up behind them. If you don’t pass on the right, you’ll die of old age.
Ok, enough about that. Think happy thoughts.
There was a phenomenal rainbow as I got to the outskirts of St. Louis. There was a big storm to the south, but the sky in the west was clear. It suddenly dawned on me that it was rainbow conditions, and I took a glance behind the car. There was a huge rainbow to the south, along with a smaller twin. I pulled off at the next exit to take a better look (I’m a big fan of the rainbows) and it was even more amazing. It was a complete rainbow, the full 180 degrees - I’ve never seen that before. I took some pictures, but the field of view of the camera wasn’t wide enough to get the whole thing unfortunately.
(Ok, it was much cooler in person, trust me.)
Tomorrow, I’m going to head for Topeka around 9am so that I can get there in time to watch the ProSolo Challenge in the afternoon. Justin and Eric are still on the road (they left quite a bit later than I did plus I think they got more of the bad weather) and should get here shortly.
Here’s one more picture from the road. They honor Jesus tastefully in the Land of Lincoln:
Effingham, IL - one big eff’ing cross
